Trained in Arabic calligraphy, Abdellaziz combines the tradition of calligraphic gesture with a resolutely contemporary pictorial freedom. In a context where expressing his faith requires discretion, he has chosen art as his means of witness. His works can hardly be exhibited publicly in his country. And yet, he continues…
Gilles Rossel presents Abdellaziz
I discovered Abdellaziz's work in Tunisia in 2016, when I came across several of his pieces displayed in a church I was visiting. I was immediately struck by their quality and by the originality of this encounter between Arabic calligraphy, painting and biblical texts.
Two years later, I organized the first exhibition of his work in Geneva. Since then, I have continued to present his works in Europe.

Abdellaziz does not simply reproduce the traditional codes of calligraphy. He transforms them.
Unlike classical Arabic calligraphy, which is often non-figurative, Abdellaziz introduces visual, symbolic or figurative elements that engage in dialogue with the biblical text and open up several levels of interpretation.
His works exude a surprising gentleness, but they also know how to surprise and challenge our perspective.
